Reading

The editorial pages use no analytics, advertising trackers or third-party fonts. Normal hosting logs may include IP addresses, request times and requested pages. Official film-preview images load from YouTube or Vimeo and those providers receive normal image requests, including your IP address. We do not send a page referrer with those preview requests. YouTube players load only after you choose Play; SFMOMA films open on the museum’s site. The providers may then apply their own privacy and cookie policies. The Notebook selection exercise keeps choices in the current page and downloads a text list locally.

One frame

The image viewer uses a session cookie to avoid repeating the last photograph. Its hidden interaction uses localStorage and a first-party cookie to remember a blank screen for 24 hours. These do not identify you across other sites.

Discussion accounts

Joining requires a username and password. Passwords are stored as hashes; keep the one-time recovery code shown at registration. No email recovery service is provided. Session cookies support sign-in and request protection. Accounts, posts, reports and security/rate-limit records are held in the site’s private discussion database.

Public contributions

Your username, posts and any photographs or video links you publish can be seen by other readers. Upload only photographs you have the right to share. Do not post private contact information or identify vulnerable strangers. Image uploads are re-encoded; avoid relying on that as a substitute for reviewing what the picture itself reveals.

Moderation and rights

You retain rights in your photographs and writing. Posting permits their display in the discussion, not their sale or reuse in a separate book. Use the report action for problems. For account/data requests, contact Mark through his contact page. Unpublished reports are for moderation, not public discussion.

Keep it worth reading

Disagree about pictures and ideas. No harassment, discriminatory abuse, spam, impersonation or invented allegations. People in photographs are people, not props for a joke. Moderators can hide posts and restrict accounts.
