Caption guide
What is visible, and what you imagine
A factual caption and a personal response can sit beside the same picture. They do different jobs.
A hypothetical example
Suppose a photograph shows a person on a bench looking down at an object in their hands.
Visible description: A person sits on a bench, looking down at an object held in both hands.
Personal response: The lowered head makes me think of a pause in a busy afternoon.
Unsupported claim: They are lonely after receiving bad news.
The last sentence invents a private event and feeling. If the person actually told you that, attribute it. Otherwise, keep it as your interpretation, or leave it out.
Use your own photograph
Add place and date only when you have checked them. Write one sentence about the visible action, then a separate response beginning “This makes me think of…”. Keep whichever helps the reader. A caption can be short.
